A member of a race in decline, Zara is one of the last of her species. Her race, known as the rabbitfolk in the Common tongue (often disparagingly referred to as bunnygirls or bunnymen), have been disappearing for centuries, despite their high birthrates, for some reason. Sages say that it’s because they’re being slowly squeezed out in the subtle expanding war between civilization and nature, while philosophers note how the rabbitfolk have no god of their own. All the while, the rabbitfolk try to live their lives and prevent themselves from going quietly into the night.

Despite being one of the last of her kind, Zara grew up knowing none of any of that. Her mother raised her and her two brothers alone on the wilds of the steppes, somehow managing to keep them not only fed and safe, but happy growing up. That happiness was cut short several years ago, when their mother lost her life fighting a cluster of ankhegs. After burying their mother, the three siblings decided to split up to make their way in the world with the understanding that they’d meet again at their mother’s grave in ten years. For her part, Zara has been adventuring since then, with her only goals being to find money and a mate for herself by the time she’s to meet her brothers again.

Greater Rage (Ex): Zara can fly into a rage three times per day. In a rage, she temporarily gains a +6 bonus to Strength, a +6 bonus to Constitution, and a +3 morale bonus on Will saves, but takes a -2 penalty to Armor Class. The increase in Constitution increases her hit points by 39, but these hit points go away at the end of the rage when her Constitution score drops back to normal. (These extra hit points are not lost first the way temporary hit points are.) While raging, Zara cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except for Balance, Escape Artist, Intimidate, and Ride), the Concentration skill, or any abilities that require patience or concentration, nor can she cast spells or activate magic items that require a command word, a spell trigger (such as a wand), or spell completion (such as a scroll) to function. She can use any feat she has except Combat Expertise, item creation feats, and metamagic feats. A fit of rage lasts for 9 rounds. Zara may prematurely end her rage. At the end of the rage, she loses the rage modifiers and restrictions and becomes fatigued (-2 penalty to Strength, -2 penalty to Dexterity, can’t charge or run) for the duration of the current encounter. Zara can fly into a rage only once per encounter. Entering a rage takes no time itself, but she can do it only during her action, not in response to someone else’s action.

Improved Uncanny Dodge (Ex): Zara cannot be flanked. This defense denies a rogue the ability to sneak attack her by flanking her, unless the attacker has at least fifteen rogue levels.

Scent (Ex): Zara is able to detect approaching enemies, sniff out hidden foes, and track by sense of smell. She can identify familiar odors just as humans do familiar sights.

Zara can detect opponents within 30 feet by sense of smell. If the opponent is upwind, the range increases to 60 feet; if downwind, it drops to 15 feet. Strong scents, such as smoke or rotting garbage, can be detected at twice the ranges noted above. Overpowering scents, such as skunk musk or troglodyte stench, can be detected at triple normal range.

When she detects a scent, the exact location of the source is not revealed—only its presence somewhere within range. Zara can take a move action to note the direction of the scent. Whenever she comes within 5 feet of the source, she pinpoints the source’s location.

Trap Sense (Ex): Zara gains a +3 bonus on Reflex saves made to avoid traps and a +3 dodge bonus to AC against attacks made by traps.

Uncanny Dodge (Ex): Zara retains her Dexterity bonus to AC even if she is caught flat-footed or struck by an invisible attacker. However, she still loses her Dexterity bonus to AC if immobilized.

Combat[]

Zara’s combat strategies are exactly what you’d expect from a barbarian: hit your enemy until they stop moving. She prefers to immediately close to melee range when a fight breaks out, only resorting to her longbow if that’s not possible. In battle, she uses Power Attack for 5 points of damage, reducing that by 2 points each round if she doesn’t consistently hit. She always uses her Dodge feat against the opponent she’s facing. If her opponent is easily hit, but her strikes don’t cause much damage, Zara rages. She’s careful not to rage too recklessly though, as she knows that when her rage is expended, she could be in real trouble if the fight goes against her.

Current Sketch[]

As the only girl among triplets, along with being raised by a single mother in the wilds, it’s little wonder that Zara grew to become a barbarian. Though she looks quite athletic, few opponents are prepared for how strong she really is; the only clue to this is how she easily carries around her silver warhammer, Heart-Breaker. That and Beauty-Keeper, her bikini armor, both previously belonged to her mother, making them intensely precious to Zara. She’ll go to any length to retrieve them if they’re lost, or repair them if they’re damaged. She doesn’t want to have either enchanted, uncomfortable with the idea of permanently altering her mother’s things.

Currently, Zara is concerned with collecting a sizeable cache of gold for herself; money to be used for helping raise the family she wants to start. While she intends to raise her children in the wild like her mother did, she knows that there will be plenty of times when she needs to buy things she can’t make herself. Her other concern is with finding a mate. While Zara has no trouble finding men who are interested in her, she rightly worries that most of them wouldn’t stay with her to raise a family. While she feels confident that she could raise even a large number of children alone, she’d prefer not to, and so keeps looking for someone loyal and dependable. In the back of her mind, Zara is also worried about the fate of her race as a whole. However, she has absolutely no idea what to do about that, and so mostly tries not to think about it.

Zara refuses to enter any urban area larger than a small town (that is, any community with a population of over 2,000 people). She usually won’t explain why, but if pressed, will admit that she doesn’t like how such places remind her that she never learned how to read. While this is true, it’s not the real reason; the last two times she entered a city, she was sexually assaulted, and now fears such a thing happening to her again.

Appearance[]

Zara is a statuesque beauty. Standing almost six feet tall, her body appears only lightly muscled, belying her great strength. Her long blonde hair nicely contrasts how her skin is darkly tanned from spending so much time in the sun. Save for her boots and her belt, all she wears is a skimpy bikini made of hide. Despite her muscle tone, she has exceptionally large breasts that jiggle with every move she makes, constantly threatening to spill out of her top. Her most striking features, however, are her ears. Though she has normal human ears, much more prominent are the large pink rabbit ears rising from the top of her head. Likewise, when viewed from the back, her pink cottontail nicely draws attention to her bottom.

Sex[]

A vivacious person who enjoys life’s simple pleasures, Zara hasn’t let what happened to her in cities diminish her sex life. She enjoys flirting with attractive men, and playfully teases women who aren’t as pretty as she is; conversely, she gets jealous easily when a woman sexier than her is around. Since nudity was a fact of life for her and her family while growing up, Zara has no reservations about being naked in the company of others (though she never does so in any kind of urban environment); indeed, she enjoys the reactions that her naked body provokes. She always keeps her armor close at hand though, in case a sudden fight breaks out (her armor can be donned in 2 rounds, or donned hastily in 1; it can be removed as a move action).

Despite her aggressive attitude, Zara is more reserved when it comes to sex itself. Zara always uses her masterwork diaphragm before having a sexual encounter, as she doesn’t quite feel ready to have children yet. If it’s ever lost or otherwise not available, she’ll accept any sort of non-magical birth control device, but won’t have sex without one unless she’s convinced that the person she’s with is committed to staying with her if she gets pregnant. Otherwise she’ll use her Craft (sexual items) skill to make another masterwork diaphragm.

When making a Constitution check to sustain sex, Zara gains a +2 synergy bonus (from her ranks in Perform (sexual techniques)) and a +2 bonus from her Sexual Training feat; she usually takes 10, meaning she can automatically last for forty minutes. She likewise takes 10 on her Perform (sexual techniques) checks, getting an automatic result of 21. This grants her a +1 on Diplomacy checks with people she’s slept with until she again has sex with them, or until a day has passed.

If using the rules for conception and pregnancy from the BoEF, treat Zara as follows. She has a 40% chance of becoming pregnant per month of sexual activity (alternately, if checking per encounter, she has a 4% chance of conceiving); if this would indicate a pregnancy, make another check against her masterwork diaphragm, which has an 80% check of successfully stopping conception. For cross-breeding (as per Table 2-4 on the BoEF) treat her as being human; sex with a human or half-elf always results in her giving birth to more rabbitfolk (see below). Like all of her race, if she does conceive she gives birth seven months later to 1d4 children.

Zara's Children[]

If you wish to play as one of Zara’s children, or as a rabbitfolk in general, the following are their racial stats, made as noted above.

  • +4 Dex, +2 Wis, +4 Cha (if using the BoEF rules, also give them an App of +2).
  • Medium-size.
  • A rabbitfolk’s base land speed is 40 ft.
  • Darkvision out to 60 ft. as well as low-light vision.
  • Scent.
  • Racial Hit Dice. A rabbitfolk begins with two levels of monstrous humanoid, which provides 2d8 Hit Dice, a base attack bonus of +2, and base saving throws of Fort +0, Ref +3, and Will +3.
  • Racial Skills: A rabbitfolk’s monstrous humanoid levels give it skill points equal to 5 x (2 + Int modifier). Its class skills are Hide, Listen, and Spot. A rabbitfolk has a +5 racial bonus to Hide checks in areas of thick brush or heavy undergrowth.
  • Racial Feats: A rabbitfolk’s monstrous humanoid levels give it one feat.
  • Automatic Languages: Common. Bonus Languages: Dwarven, Elven, Giant, Gnoll, Gnome, Halfling, Orc.
  • Favored Class: Druid.
  • Level adjustment: +2.

"Clean" Version[]

If you prefer to use a less sexual version of Zara, just make the following changes. Delete her Perform (sexual techniques) and Craft (sexual items) skills, redistributing the 12 skill points as follows: +2 to Climb, Survival, and Swim, and +3 to Jump and Listen. Replace her Exotic Armor Proficiency (underwear), Anatomically Over-Endowed, and Sexual Training feats with Cleave, Mobility, and Spring Attack. Her hide underwear armor becomes normal hide armor (albeit with the other modifications). Finally, delete her masterwork diaphragm, and give her an additional 10 gp (the cost of creating one herself; the normal market price is 15 gp).

Design Notes[]

Zara’s race was constructed by taking a hare (from Dangerous Denizens [1]) and applying the anthropomorphic animal template from Savage Species [2]. Her size was then increased from Small to Medium, with all the attending changes (both normally, and for that template).

Zara’s ability scores use the “powerful array,” and were originally Str 18, Dex 10, Con 16, Int 13, Wis 8, Cha 12, and App 14. Her race gives her stat adjustments of Dex +4, Wis +2, Cha +4, and App +2 (this was calculated in that a hare would have the same Appearance as a cat, which the BoEF gives an App score of 12; hence, a +2 bonus to racial adjustments). Her levels give her 3 discretionary ability points, 2 of which were spent on Strength, and 1 on Appearance.

Zara uses several mechanics from the Book of Erotic Fantasy [3], including the Appearance stat, the Perform (sexual techniques) and Craft (sexual items) skills, her masterwork diaphragm, and her Sexual Training feat (which lets her take Perform (sexual techniques) as a class skill).

Zara also uses the naked defense and underwear armor rules from EN Armoury: Chainmail Bikini [4]. Her Exotic Armor Proficiency (underwear) feat lets her gain the full +3 armor bonus from her hide bikini armor. The armor itself has a non-magical +5 enhancement bonus (using the rules for legendary armor from The Player’s Guide to Arcanis [5]). The mobility improvement makes it light armor instead of medium. Her Anatomically Over-Endowed feat increases her AC from her underwear armor by +1 as well. The feat also gives her a +2 circumstance bonus on all Charisma-based skill checks against creatures who would be sexually/romantically interested in her; such creatures also take a -2 circumstance penalty on attack and damage rolls against her. Against creatures who would not be sexually/romantically interested in her, Zara takes a -2 circumstance penalty to Charisma-based skill checks (except for Intimidate). If naked, Zara still gains a flat +2 armor bonus to AC.

The above rules only apply against humanoids, fey, giants, monstrous humanoids, and outsiders, as well as intelligent creatures that have the augmented subtype for one of those types. Against all other creature types (as well as creatures that cannot see), Zara’s armor provides no bonuses (nor does she gain the bonus for being naked).

Zara’s weapon, Heart-Breaker, is a greater masterwork weapon, also from The Player’s Guide to Arcanis. It has a non-magical +1 enhancement bonus on attack and damage rolls.

Zara’s total hit dice were used as a baseline for determining her wealth. She was given 35,000 gp as a 13th-level NPC.

Zara was inspired by, and is an homage to, Fran and the viera from Final Fantasy XII.
