Sylmort has enslaved a number of hobgoblins for his personal amusement. He still enjoys personally causing pain to smaller things, but has now gotten big enough that doing so can attract unwanted attention from even more powerful beings, like human heroes looking to loot a hoard. By threatening the hobgoblins, he can have them raid towns for plenty of gold to add to his hoard... and when it comes down to it, isn't money the most important thing anyway?
Sylmort's lair is beneath a fire swamp, amidst a petrified forest.
