Irilena, Human Rogue 4/Cleric 5/Ghostkiss Investigator 5
From d20 NPC Wiki
It's a sad truism that cruelty usually breeds cruelty. Those injured out of spite are likely to themselves harm someone else simply to cause pain and spread their misery around. But sometimes, victims of abuse rise above the purely reactionary urge to inflict suffering on others so that they might feel more secure; instead, such individuals often dedicate themselves to helping others, either protecting them from having to endure pain as they have, or healing those who've already been so grievously hurt in hopes of giving them some measure of peace.
Irilena considers herself to be one of the latter, and her chosen victims are those that many see as nothing more than soulless monsters: the undead.
As a little girl, Irilena grew up in the slums of a trade city located near the edge of a desert. One of the many poor families eking out a living among the squalor, Irilena eschewed the usual childhood games of petty theft that most kids her age engaged in. Rather, she was happy to beg for food and coins, not because she lacked pride or spirit, but because she loved talking to people. Meeting so many strangers from foreign lands, Irilena was always delighted to hear tales of strange and wondrous things, finding the stories to be almost as rewarding as coins or pieces of fruit she begged for.
It wasn't long before tragedy stepped into Irilena's life, however. As she entered her teenage years, her maturing body drew more and more glances that were appraising rather than pitying or sympathetic. Being a beautiful beggar girl, it was perhaps inevitable that someone would try to take advantage of her. When a band of foreign adventurers passed through the city and caught sight of the young maiden, they saw only her budding physique and her obvious poverty, noting how the latter meant that there would surely be no consequences for sexually assaulting her.
Dragged into an alley, her cries for help stifled, Irilena was beaten and raped by the group several times before being discarded like so much garbage. Laying amid the filth and the trash of the alley for hours, it was all the broken and violated fourteen year-old girl could do to muster up the will to drag herself home.
Despite her family's earnest efforts to help her, Irilena never fully recovered from what happened to her. Her body healed well enough, but the wounds to her spirit were far worse. Gone was the bright-eyed girl who'd so eagerly sought out strangers for their money and their tales. Instead there was a quiet, frightened creature who covered herself always, and trembled if anyone seemed to pay too much attention to her.
Irilena's story might have ended there, but for a twist of fate. No longer able to beg for sustenance as well as she once had, Irilena turned to grave-robbing to try and supplement what she brought home to her family. It was on one such escapade that she stumbled upon a secretive group in the midst of raising the dead! Frightened, Irilena tried to flee, but quickly set off the group's magical alarm, and was captured in short order. Scared out of her mind, Irilena begged not to be made into an unholy monster...and was greeted by mirthful laughter from her captors.
Confused, the little girl could only listen as the leader of the group explained that they were the faithful the goddess known as Evening Glory. Evening Glory, they explained to her, was a deity of love; not the fleshy, carnal love that so many other gods endorsed, but rather the platonic love that warms the heart and lasts for all eternity. To that end, the leader told Irilena, Evening Glory was also a goddess of undeath; after all, the walking dead have no need for physical lusts to distract them, and could experience true love forever. The mummy she had seen them animating was merely the latest such adherent to accept Evening Glory's blessing in this manner.
Releasing Irilena without harm or threats now that the ritual was over, the group bid her farewell, leaving the stunned girl behind. As she headed back to her family, Irilena's thoughts were consumed with what she had just been told. The idea of ever experiencing love was foreign to her, and had been since she was raped. But the idea of a deity who not only promised that, but also would give her an undead form that could never again be so horribly violated the way her living body had been, intrigued her deeply. After several days of mulling it over, Irilena sought out the group again, managing to stumble upon them as they were preparing to leave the city. Approaching them, Irilena begged to be allowed to join them, wanting to embrace the faith of Evening Glory. Surprised but pleased, the adherents of The Deathless Beauty took her under their wing, and began to indoctrinate her into their religion as they left Irilena's home, and her old life, behind.
Irilena spent several years with the group, absorbing their teachings and devoutly worshiping Evening Glory with all her heart. As she grew older, and the trauma of what happened to her grew more distant, Irilena began to experience physical lusts, but in keeping with the teachings of Evening Glory's church, never acted on them; carnality, she was taught, obscured the way to true love, and was the antithesis of the eternal life after death that Evening Glory promised. It was a dogma she believed in, until one day, something happened that shook her faith to the core.
Having recently left the band she'd been with for years to strike out on her own, Irilena was visiting a city to purchase supplies when, while wandering through a back alley, she heard something that was bone-chillingly familiar: the pained cries of a woman. Barely managing to fight back the urge to run away, she followed the sounds to find a girl, a few years younger than herself, being raped horribly. The sight was almost enough to break Irilena's spirit all over again, and it was because of that that she stood there, stunned, doing nothing as the perpetrator not only finished with his victim, but slit her throat as well. Snapping out of her shock at that, Irilena felt something else filling her as her shock fled: rage. The sight of the dead girl filled her with an anger she'd never experienced before, and she fell upon the killer with all the fury of a victim striking back at her tormentors. Killing the rapist, Irilena let out a breath, and turned around...
Only to come face-to-face with the dead girl, who had risen less than a minute previous as a revenant.
Irilena fell back at the sight, shocked and confused. Her confusion only grew when the undead girl wailed loudly at the sight of her dead killer, demanding to know why Irilena had killed him first and robbed her of the justice of doing so. Sputtering, Irilena apologized, but tried to explain to the revenant that now she was free of her mortal concerns, and could live an eternal existence devoted to pure love, in Evening Glory's name. The dead girl, however, rejected that notion utterly, moaning how all she felt was rage and hatred and loss over what had happened to her. How, she cried, could she feel love now when she had never known it when she was alive, as her first exposure to sex had been the rape that resulted in her murder? For her, this undeath was a curse with not even revenge as a means of respite.
For Irilena, who had only had undeath explained to her as being a blessed state wherein one could enjoy love for all time, the realization that undeath could be a state of agony, a punishment rather than a reward, undercut the beliefs that she had built her new life on. It shook her faith in Evening Glory to its foundations, and left her teetering precariously on the edge.
Not even fully cognizant of just how much of a strain on her mind this new revelation was, all Irilena could think of were the parallels between herself and the undead girl in front of her. Both were young girls who had been raped before knowing any sort of physical love. Both were focused on the state of undeath...only the revenant girl had already achieved that existence, and found it horribly lacking, showing that it wasn't perhaps the bliss Irilena was expecting. Shaken, horrified, and weeping, Irilena stepped closer to the poor girl, whose flesh was still warm and supple after her unexpected animation...and kissed her deeply.
Shocked, the dead girl pulled away and demanded to know what Irilena was doing. Trembling, Irilena explained that it wasn't fair that the other girl had known not just a life, but also an unlife that was so devoid of pleasure...so she would please her now, giving her at least a glimpse of the love she had been denied. Utterly stunned by the offer, the revenant hesitantly agreed...and there, hidden in the alley, mere feet from the dead body of the rapist, Irilena and the revenant girl made love.
After it was over, Irilena held her undead lover close, wondering if perhaps she'd found someone to love at last when the other girl spoke up, asking her for a favor. Still panting from the afterglow of the pleasure they'd shared, Irilena promised her anything...and so was caught totally off-guard as the dead girl asked Irilena to kill her. Seeing her lover's horror, her undead paramour explained that she didn't want to keep existing as she was...even after Irilena's kindness, she was still filled with so much anger and spite, and it was horrible. She had no purpose, no reason to exist now, and though she appreciated what Irilena had done for her, she wanted to be released. It took almost half-an-hour of pleading, but a tearful Irilena finally agreed to release her from her state of undead. Unfortunately, Irilena had never received training in de-animating the undead...the only way she could release her lover from undeath was to inflict damage on her. And so it was that, sobbing, Irilena took a large rock and bashed her beloved's head in. Because the wounds kept closing (due to her lover's fast healing), it took Irilena ten long minutes to finally kill her, leaving the mutilated corpse on the ground. Wretching and weeping, Irilena stumbled away...and it was then that she realized she'd never learned the other girl's name.
It was the last straw for her already fractured sanity.
Once again broken in spirit, and with her faith in her goddess having crumbled, Irilena tried vainly to put her shattered world back together. Slowly, over the course of many days, she began to develop a set of ideas that would make sense of her life, and everything that had happened up to now. The undead, she decided, were blessed only when created in Evening Glory's name; otherwise they were flawed and cursed, doomed to exist in a state of suffering without end, instead of eternal love. Moreover, now that she knew that, Irilena would exist to correct the mistake that was these "suffering" undead...she would bring them love, using her body to show them that pleasure still existed for them, as she had for her revenant lover, and then she would destroy them, ending their suffering. Surely, she reasoned, Evening Glory would approve of that? Wouldn't the goddess of love and undeath object to undead that knew no love anymore? Wouldn't she want them to cease to be, and wouldn't she want them to at least feel some love before being released? Despite that it flew in the face of her clerical teachings, Irilena was sure she was right, and her faith was rekindled by her newfound revelations.
Irilena has spent several years since then practicing her art of "laying" the undead to rest. Now in her mid-twenties, she's more certain than ever that she's serving her goddess. After all, not only does Evening Glory still grant her spells, but she's now found a way to lay the undead to rest through sex alone. In Irilena's mind, this new power is nothing short of a direct miracle from her goddess. To be able to let the undead not only feel love through her body, but also grant them rest without having to violently savage them, is a holy act to Irilena. The fact that she takes great physical pleasure in it is merely an enjoyable side-effect. She continues to wander the world, confident and purposeful in her quest to gently bring the unquiet dead to peace with her passion.

Altar of the Body (Su): If Irilena can change an undead’s attitude to at least friendly, she may willingly offer her body to the ghost or undead in exchange for its final banishment from the mortal plane. It doesn’t matter the undead creature’s gender or sexual orientation in life - it is intimacy, closeness and affection the spirit craves, not just sexual rut.
Once offered this sexual rite of exorcism, the undead may attempt a Will save (DC 21) (using a Wisdom score of 10 or the undead’s Wisdom score in life for mindless undead, whichever is less) to refuse, otherwise it accepts. Once the ritual is refused, that undead can never be the target of this ability again by Irilena.
The sexual encounter lasts 1d4 hours. Depending on the creature, it might involve a necrophiliac encounter with a skeleton, decaying zombie or other corporeal undead. Irilena can always sexually interact with otherwise incorporeal undead, enjoying them as if they were a living partner. If the undead is attacked or harmed during the sexual rite, the effect is broken, and the creature can never again be seduced by Irilena.
Once complete, the undead is destroyed forever. An undead creature exorcised in this manner cannot be raised or resurrected while Irilena lives. Though disturbing, the encounter is almost always pleasurable for Irilena, though she is exhausted after performing this draining, demanding ritual.
Death Without Fear or Pain (Su): Irilena is immune to all mundane and magical fear effects, and cannot be made shaken, cowering, or panicked.
Diplomacy of Gentle Death (Su): Irilena is a mediator between the worlds of the living and those of the dead. Restless souls, even the angriest, most hostile spirits are drawn to her compassion and gentle nature, and will often break of an assault to parley with the one human who can help them find peace.
Irilena adds her Wis modifier as a bonus on all Bluff, Diplomacy and Gather Information checks she makes against sentient undead (factored into above statistics). She is an effective diplomat among the lifeless.
In addition, Irilena may use any of the following effects, but only 3/day in total. Each effect lasts for 5 minutes.
• Become invisible to mindless undead. Mindless undead will not harm or interact with Irilena, unless she attacks them. The creature can then act normally.
• Gain the ability to communicate with mindless undead, by calling a shard of that creature’s soul back to inhabit its body. Irilena can communicate and use Charisma-based skills on mindless undead, as if the creatures had Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma scores equal to 10 or the scores they had in life, whichever is less.
• Render a single mindless undead creature vulnerable to mind-influencing effects. The creature must be within 30 ft. of Irilena. This ability renders the undead vulnerable to all mind-affecting effects, not just Irilena’s. The creature is treated as if it has Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma scores equal to 10 or the scores they had in life, whichever is less.
• Improve the result of a turning check. As part of the action of the turning attempt, Irilena can receive a +1d6 bonus on the turning check, enabling her to confront more dangerous undead.
• Automatically adjust a sentient undead’s attitude. As a free action, Irilena can attempt to use her force of personality and strange connection to the dead to improve her relationship with any sentient undead creature. The undead receives a Will save (DC 17) to resist the effect. If the save is failed, the creature’s attitude towards Irilena alone improves by one category.
This is normally a temporary change, but if negotiations go well, even a hostile ghost or hungry vampire might come to regard Irilena as a trusted friend. This effect ends abruptly if Irilena attacks the undead after using this ability. A single undead may be affected by this ability only once per encounter.
Evasion (Ex): Irilena can avoid even magical and unusual attacks with great agility. If she makes a successful Reflex save against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, she instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only when Irilena is wearing light armor or no armor. If helpless, Irilena does not gain the benefit of evasion.
Ghostsight (Su): Irilena can naturally see invisible creatures and objects, as well as see creatures moving through the Astral and Ethereal plane near her. When in any cemetery or murder sight, Irilena’s eyes become even keener, granting her low-light vision.
Five times per day Irilena can call upon some minor spirit, too weakly connected to the mortal plane for other ghost hunters to perceive or affect, for aid. These minor spirits cannot be turned or affected by most creatures, though other Ghostkiss Investigators can perceive these peaceful dead souls.
These weak ghosts have forgotten most of the details of their mortal life, which might have passed centuries ago, but still aid their “living sister” to the best of their ability and show traces of their long dead personality and interests.
The ghostly intercession takes the form of a +1d4 morale bonus on Irilena’s next skill check, attack roll or saving throw. Requesting ghostly aid is a considered part of the action involved in performing the check.
Within a few minutes after the task is complete, Irilena is expected to make a gesture of thanks to the spirit world: a brief prayer, a sacrifice of rice or incense, or any other minor respectful gesture. If she fails to thank her helpful spirit guides, she angers the ghosts, and cannot call upon this class feature until she next sleeps.
Rebuke Undead (Su): Irilena may rebuke undead 5/day. She gains a +16 bonus to turning checks and when rolling turning damage.
Rite of Exorcism (Su): Irilena does not need a holy symbol to rebuke undead.
Sneak Attack (Ex): Irilena’s attacks deal +2d6 extra damage any time her target would be denied a Dexterity bonus to AC or when Irilena flanks her.
Ranged attacks only count as sneak attacks if the target is within 30 ft.
With a sap (blackjack) or an unarmed strike, Irilena can make a sneak attack that deals nonlethal damage instead of lethal damage. She cannot use a weapon that deals lethal damage to deal nonlethal damage in a sneak attack, not even with the usual -4 penalty.
Irilena can sneak attack only living creatures with discernible anatomies—undead, constructs, oozes, plants, and incorporeal creatures lack vital areas to attack. Any creature that is immune to critical hits is not vulnerable to sneak attacks. Irilena must be able to see the target well enough to pick out a vital spot and must be able to reach such a spot. Irilena cannot sneak attack while striking a creature with concealment or striking the limbs of a creature whose vitals are beyond reach.
Trap Sense (Ex): Irilena gains an intuitive sense that alerts her to danger from traps, giving her a +1 bonus on Reflex saves made to avoid traps and a +1 dodge bonus to AC against attacks made by traps.
Trapfinding (Ex): Irilena can use the Search skill to locate traps when the task has a Difficulty Class higher than 20.
Finding a nonmagical trap has a DC of at least 20, or higher if it is well hidden. Finding a magic trap has a DC of 25 + the level of the spell used to create it.
Irilena can use the Disable Device skill to disarm magic traps. A magic trap generally has a DC of 25 + the level of the spell used to create it.
If Irilena beats a trap’s DC by 10 or more with a Disable Device check, she can study a trap, figure out how it works, and bypass it (with her party) without disarming it.
Uncanny Dodge (Ex): Irilena can react to danger before her senses would normally allow her to do so. Presuming she has a Dexterity bonus to AC (such as if under a cat’s grace spell) she retains it even if she is caught flat-footed or struck by an invisible attacker. However, she still loses her Dexterity bonus to AC if immobilized.
Undead Intuition (Ex): Irilena has a +5 bonus on Knowledge (religion) checks to identify undead (factored into above statistics).
[edit] Combat
Irilena avoids combat with living creatures unless they're creating the undead. If that's the case, she'll try and use her rebuking abilities and special powers to minimize the living being's undead support, and move into single combat after casting entropic shield on herself (and, if the enemy is priestly, divine interdiction on them); she'll use command (to drop his weapon) and orgasmic vibrations if the foe is one she's having a hard time defeating. If she'd be outnumbered by living opponents, she'll either fall back to engage them at a later time, or (if desperate) hire additional support to back her up.
When facing undead enemies, Irilena uses the same basic tactics, though she works towards a different goal. She'll identify the most powerful undead (using her Knowledge (religion) skill) and focus on isolating it. She'll use her rebuking abilities and Diplomacy of Gentle Death to isolate it from other undead, and then try to negotiate her way into the undead's good graces (e.g. make it at least friendly); she usually uses her Charm domain power immediately before making a Diplomacy check. Once she's done that, she'll try and find a secure area so that she may use Altar of the Body to lay the undead to rest. After doing so, she'll rest for at least an hour to bring her status from exhausted to fatigued and then use her soothing touch domain ability on herself. She reserves her searing light and cure light wounds spells for if she has to fight the undead creature, presuming she can't negotiate with it. She's loathe to do this, however.
[edit] Current Sketch
Irilena is more focused, and more at peace, now than she's been in years. She's utterly certain she's been given a holy mission by her goddess, and cannot be convinced otherwise; not only has she gained the power to free the undead from their torment with physical love, but her hair has recently turned stark white, and her heart has ceased to beat in her chest - she considers these to be direct signs of Evening Glory's favor. She now wanders the world, seeking out the undead and (upon determining that they weren't created in Evening Glory's ideals) lays them to rest with her body.
Except when bringing peace to the unliving, Irilena abstains from sex entirely. This is due to her belief that her Altar of the Body power is a divine gift, and that to have sex with a living being would at best cheapen it, and at worst cause it to be lost entirely. She can't admit to herself that she also has no desire to couple with a living person because, in the back of her mind, it's still too similar to what happened to her when she was raped all those years ago. Given that, Irilena channels her sexual urges into finding more undead creatures that she can release from their torment. It's important to note that she does not consider herself to be a necrophile, for two reasons; first, she only has sex with the undead, not with those who are simply dead, and secondly, she does what she does so that the undead may be given peace, not because it's pleasurable (the fact that it's intensely enjoyable for her is something she considers to be merely a pleasant coincidence).
Despite her enjoyment of her new lot in life, Irilena has a fairly large share of troubles. In many instances, ordinary people have stumbled upon her using Altar of the Body, despite her best efforts at concealment. Without exception, the people who discover what she does have reacted with horror and disgust, and have quickly raised mobs to try and kill her, forcing her to flee the area. Word has begun to spread throughout the region of "Death's Whore," slandering her with vicious lies and outrageous gossip.
Worse than this, however, is that the church of Evening Glory has recently learned of Irilena's activities. Outraged beyond measure at how many of their holy tenets she's violating (such as engaging in physical affection with the undead, as well as destroying undead beings), they've begun to create an inquisition specifically for her. They haven't yet heard Irilena's idea that she's carrying out the will of their goddess, but even if they were confronted with such an idea, they'd find it blasphemous. At the head of the inquisition are several of Irilena's old friends who introduced her to Evening Glory to begin with, something Irilena would be horrified to learn.
Interestingly, despite retaining her holy powers, Irilena has forsaken the traditional holy symbol of Evening Glory (a pair of hands with heart-shaped holes in the palms). She believes that her service to her goddess is different enough from the orthodoxy that a new holy symbol is required. She has yet perceive an omen telling her what the new holy symbol should be, however, and so until then she operates without one. While she is still able to rebuke the undead (thanks to her Rite of Exorcism power), she is only able to use spells without a divine focus component, sharply limiting her spell selection.
[edit] Appearance
Standing at a petite 5'4" tall, Irilena is an exotic beauty. Her skin is a dark brown, but her short hair is the color of new-fallen snow, something that happened only recently (it used to be jet black). Those who admire her ample bosom may notice that her chest stays very still, a hint about how she no longer needs to breathe (though she must still do so to speak).
Irilena originally preferred to strip completely naked before engaging in a sexual encounter with an undead. However, after having almost been killed by an interloper who saw what she was doing, she's now changed tactics. She always wears her studded leather armor and ring, even while sleeping. She eschews pants, however, preferring to wear skirts or dresses, but never underwear. This allows her to simply flip up her skirt and have sex without removing her armor.
[edit] "Clean" Version
It's difficult to post a stat block for Irilena that removes anything sexual, as her Ghostkiss Investigator levels grant her an inherently sexual ability (altar of the body). Beyond that, change her Pleasure domain back to Protection, and alter her domain spells prepared (specifically her orgasmic vibrations 3rd-level domain spell) as appropriate.
[edit] Design Notes
[edit] Ability Scores
Irilena's ability scores were generated using a 25-point buy. The breakdown was spent like so: Str 10 (2 points), Dex 10 (2 points), Con 10 (2 points), Int 13 (5 points), Wis 15 (8 points), Cha 14 (6 points). Following this, she gained 3 ability points at 4th, 8th, and 12th levels, 2 of which were spent on Constitution, and 1 on Strength.
[edit] Prestige Classes
Irilena's levels in Ghostkiss Investigator are from Black Tokyo [1], by Skortched Urf' Studios. Because Ghostkiss Investigator is a Modern d20 prestige class, and Irilena is a Fantasy d20 character, various aspects of the prestige class were "translated" to Fantasy d20. The skill and feat prerequisites for the PrC (and only those) were changed to be Gather Information 8 ranks, Knowledge (arcana) 6 ranks, Knowledge (nature) 4 ranks, Knowledge (religion) 8 ranks, Diplomacy 2 ranks, Investigator, and Iron Will. Likewise, the class skills were changed to be Decipher Script, Diplomacy, Gather Information, Handle Animal, Heal, Hide, Intimidate, Knowledge (arcana, nature, religion), Listen, Move Silently, Profession (any religious, mortician, investigatory), Search, Sense Motive, Speak Language.
[edit] Rebuke Undead
Irilena's original alignment was Neutral. As Evening Glory is a Neutral deity, Irilena could choose to wield positive or negative energy. She chose negative, and so rebukes undead, and spontaneously converts her (non-domain) spell to an inflict spell of appropriate level.
The Ghostkiss Investigator's Rite of Exorcism power allows them to rebuke undead as an Acolyte equal to their Ghostkiss Investigator level. Since this prestige class is translated to being a Fantasy d20 version of itself (see above), this was held to be the same as a cleric's rebuke undead power. Given that, as the guideline laid down for multiclass characters in the Player's Handbook v.3.5 (pg. 59), her Ghostkiss Investigator levels were added to her cleric levels for purposes of her effective ability to rebuke undead. Her Practiced Turning/Rebuking feat (see below) increases this by +4.
[edit] Religion
Evening Glory is a deity from Libris Mortis [2], by Wizards of the Coast. Evening Glory is a Neutral goddess, which would normally make Irilena (who was formerly Neutral, but is now Chaotic Good) unable to be a cleric of her. However, Irilena's Heretic of the Faith feat (see below) makes that possible. As per the feat, she has one domain that is normally offered by her deity (Charm, in this case) and has since traded the second domain for a different one not normally offered by her deity (she used to have Protection, but now has Pleasure, from the Book of Erotic Fantasy [3]).
[edit] Feats
Irilena has one more feat than normal; Gifts of Ecstasy is gained as a bonus feat from her third Ghostkiss Investigator level.
Several of Irilena's feats are from sources outside of the SRD. These are summarized below, by source:
Dead Heart, from Mega-Feats [4], by Skortched Urf' Studios - Your heart does not beat, and thus you don't need to breathe, nor do you take additional damage from wounding weapons.
Gifts of Ecstasy, from Black Tokyo [5], by Skortched Urf' Studios - gain a +4 bonus on "sexually-oriented" Bluff and Diplomacy checks, as well as on Perform (courtesan or prostitute) checks.
Heretic of the Faith, from Power of Faerun [6], by Wizards of the Coast - Clerics may be up to two alignment "steps" away from their deity; only one domain needs to be from their god's offered domains, the other may be any other domain.
Practiced Spellcaster, from Complete Arcane [7], by Wizards of the Coast - You gain a caster level in one of your spellcasting classes for each Hit Die/level that does not increase that class's caster level, up to +4.
Practiced Turning/Rebuking, from the Skirmisher Publishing forums [8] - You gain an effective cleric level for turning/rebuking for each Hit Die/level that does not increase your turning/rebuking abilities, up to +4.
