Pit (Ex) A creeping pit is 10 ft deep. A creeping pit simply moves into its foes space as a move action, causing all creatures that occupy its space to fall into the pit (Ref DC 12 negates). Creatures that save successfully move to an adjacent square. Creatures falling in the pit take 1d6 falling damage. The save DC is Dex-based.
Vulnerability to Extradimensional Space (Ex) Any extradimensional space brought within a creeping pit causes it to invert for 1 hour. Inverted creeping pits suck all objects and creatures within 10 ft to the Astral plane (Ref DC 12 negates). After 1 hour, the creeping pit is destroyed. Additionally, a gate spell has the same effect on a creeping pit if it is opened from within the hole. The save DC is Dex-based.
Skills Creeping pits have a +8 bonus on Move Silently checks.
Strategy and Tactics A creeping pit prefers to hide completely within a wall or just inches under the surface of a floor until it detects nearby creatures with its tremorsense. When it does so, it emerges from hiding behind a large group, moving silently, until it successfully traps a creature in its pit. It then remains motionless (unless it is attacked) until no creatures are within its tremorsense. If attacked, its dashes at the enemies, trapping as many creatures as it can within its pit before returning to its hiding place.
Ecology Creeping pits are created when a bag of devouring is placed within a portable hole. This opens a rift to the Astral plane for 1 hour, after which a creeping pit is created. Creeping pits co-exist on the Material plane and the Astral plane. Objects and creatures that stay in the pit have a 25% chance per hour of transporting to the Astral plane. Objects and creatures thus transported provide nourishment for the creeping pit.
Environment Any underground
Typical Physical Characteristics A creeping pit is a 10 ft square by 10 ft deep pit composed of the same material as that of the surrounding area. The hole of a creeping pit is actually an extradimensional space that remains open; this cannot provide egress through the floor on which it travels.
Alignment Always neutral
Typical Treasure Half standard
Advanced Creature 1-20 HD (Large) (A creeping pit is 10 ft deep per HD, and its SR is 12+HD)
