The AiboXXIII is a prototype automated defense system utilized by at least one corporation in the Dark Matter universe.
The robot has a very advanced program that almost simulated artificial intelligence; enough to operate independently from an operator, but it cannot break its programming, nor can it solve non-mathematical problems without assistance. It is programmed to follow simple verbal orders from a pre-coded list (such as "attack") from anyone brandishing the right keycard (provided the Aibo can see it). Someone holding a "master" keycard can override someone else's orders. The Aibo can be programmed to recognize someone's face and follow their orders to the exclusion of other orders. Normally Aibo follows standing orders, such as "attack on sight" anyone not programmed into its memory. (Verbal orders are naturally simpler than typed orders.)
Aibo is connected by remote control to a stationary security console, from which orders can be issued with a keyboard (range one mile). Its visual and auditory input (hidden by a smoked dome on its head) are sent to the console's screen and speaker system, while the console's microphone can pick up sounds and emit them from the Aibo's own speaker system.
If pinned, the AiboXXIII's side panel can be opened (Disable Device DC 30), and then it can be reprogrammed. This requires a computer and a data connection; the task DC is 20 and requires a whole minute, during which time the Aibo must be prevented from moving from its place. The console can also be reprogrammed, but without the password, the DC is 40.
The AiboXXIII looks like a large metallic dog. It can only be confused for a real dog in darkness.
